Congratulations. If you’ve landed on this page you’ve come to recognize the practical benefits of a small-displacement scooter and are on your way to effortless commutes around town. That, after all, is what scooters are all about: efficient, sensible, and fun urban transportation. And maybe sometimes a little more.
OK, so the Zuma 125 isn’t exactly an off-road weapon, but it’s a proven package with rugged styling that helps it fit in when traversing the urban jungle, exploring campgrounds, or riding the gravel roads that lead to your favorite fishing hole.
The scooter manages this through the use of a fuel-injected 125cc four-stroke engine with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA), which changes valve timing at different rpm, providing stronger torque at lower speeds but plenty of pep as engine speeds pick up. Even better, Yamaha claims 101 mpg, which works with the 1.6-gallon fuel tank to offer plenty of range. A fully automatic V-belt transmission contributes to the overall ease of use.
Zuma 125 hardware consists of a steel-tube frame with traditional step-through design, a telescopic fork, and twin rear shocks, the former with 3.2 inches of travel and the latter with 3.1 inches. Brakes include a 245mm disc up front and 230mm disc out back, with a unified braking system providing some braking force to the front brake when the rear is applied. Tires are Duro tubeless tires with a block pattern that once again hints at Yamaha’s intentions to build a scooter that will occasionally be used on unpaved roads.
Additional convenience features come in the form of an underseat storage compartment that fits a full-face helmet, plus a front storage compartment with USB socket. A plush seat has rider and passenger accommodations, with a narrow design for easy flat-footing.
The 2024 Yamaha Zuma 125 is available in Matte Black or Sand Gray for $3,799. Hard to argue with the look of either, though the red wheels on the Matte Black option pop!
