2021 Honda ADV150 Scooter Review MC Commute

A quick review of Honda’s rugged-looking ADV150 scooter.

After letting the rest of the world have a taste of adventure scooter riding, Honda imports a smaller-displacement version of its rugged-looking ADV scooter with the 2021 Honda ADV150 ($4,299) scooter. Based off of the conservatively styled, but highly functional PCX150 scooter, the ADV150 hopes to rekindle the flame of scooters for would-be Generation Z riders.

Editor’s Note: In the state of California operating the ADV150 requires an M1 motorcycle endorsement. It cannot be operated on the freeway due to its engine size (less than 150cc).

Scooters are all about simplicity, ease of use, and efficiency. And the ADV150 doesn’t disappoint. In lieu of a traditional key, the ADV uses a key fob that must be in near proximity for the vehicle to start. Getting moving is as simple as a twist of the wrist. There’s no gears to shift and no clutch lever to work. Next to the throttle is the front brake lever and the back brake occupies the left side where a clutch lever would traditionally be. There’s also a parking brake for use when parking on uneven surfaces. The scooter can be stowed using either the kick- or centerstand.

Like most scooters, the 2021 Honda ADV150 offers a simplified riding experience. Controls consist of a throttle and front and rear brake levers. An automatic belt-drive transmission makes riding as easy as a twist of the wrist.Joseph McKimmy

Smooth and fuel efficient, the 149cc liquid-cooled single isn’t going to win many drag races. But it delivers a smooth spread of power that is easy to control. Honda says it’s good for 70 mph and we don’t doubt that claim. Fuel mileage-wise it delivers nearly 80 mpg which is good for a range of more than 160 miles based on the 2.1-gallon fuel tank capacity.

Chucky tires and generous travel suspension do a fine job of rolling over bumps on the road, however the ADV still rides very much like a scooter. While it is super nimble, you’ll feel bumps through the seat. Still it isn’t a deal breaker. The ADV is off-road capable too. A manual two-position-adjustable windscreen is a nice touch as is the 12-volt power port located in the front weather-sealed compartment.

A generous underseat storage compartment swallows more than 8 gallons of cargo (that’s more than a 24-pack of soda). There’s also passenger accommodations so a friend can tag along.

Full LED lighting helps a Honda rider stand out on the road and a monochrome instrumentation panel shares machine vitals. The display could be larger, but considering the ADV’s affordable price tag we can’t knock it.

Dual push/pull type adjustment knobs allow the windscreen to be raised or lowered.Joseph McKimmy

Urban dwellers would be wise to pick up an ADV150. Easy to use, easy to park, Honda’s new scooter checks all the boxes for someone looking for greater freedom and flexibility without breaking the bank.
