The 2019 Yamaha YZ450F is the “bLU cRU’s” flagship motocross bike. The YZ450F was all-new last year with a completely revised fuel-injected, titanium-valved engine, updated suspension components, a redesigned frame, different bodywork, and the addition of electric starting. Yamaha also put Wi-Fi on the bike, giving owners the freedom to adjust the fuel and ignition timing with their smartphones using the free-to-download Power Tuner app.
For 2019, the YZ450F has received a number of minor revisions. The changes include stiffer compression damping on the Kayaba fork and shock while retaining the same spring rates as the 2018 model, new front and rear axle wheel collars boasting increased rigidity, new seat foam that is said to be 16-percent stiffer than that of the 2018 model, and a 49-tooth (one tooth larger) rear sprocket. The electric starter was also updated in an effort to reduce drag and power loss. The 2019 model is available in either Team Yamaha Blue or white. A blue valve cover is exclusive to the Team Yamaha Blue YZ450F while the white bike retains the standard cover.
Likes: Torquey engine, plush suspension, and class-leading stability
Dislikes: Heavy feel, standard ergonomics don't please everyone
Verdict: Sharper handling and more performance-oriented suspension
The 2019 Yamaha YZ450F press introduction was held at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California. We came away impressed with how the bike handled more sharply, yet maintained its excellent straight-line stability. The new suspension settings also provide a more performance-oriented feel, while still maintaining excellent comfort.
The Yamaha YZ450F lives in the 450cc motocross bike category. It competes directly with the Honda CRF450R, Husqvarna FC 450, Kawasaki KX450, KTM 450 SX-F, and Suzuki RM-Z450. These four-strokes have advanced significantly in recent years. In 2019, all but the RM-Z450 are equipped with electric starting.
The 2019 Yamaha YZ450F is the only bike in the 450cc motocross class that has Kayaba’s Speed-Sensitive System (SSS) coil-spring fork, which offers the plushest ride and most comfort of any factory fork. The YZ450F costs $9,299, which is the same price as the Honda CRF450R and Kawasaki KX450.
