2024 Yamaha MT-09 Preview

Yamaha shows off an updated-for-2024 MT-09 naked bike.

Yamaha’s punchy MT-09 naked bike gets important refinements for the 2024 model year.Yamaha

The middleweight-plus sized naked bike segment continues to heat up with the introduction of an updated-for-2024 Yamaha MT-09 ($10,599—a $1,200 increase from the 2021 model and a $800 increase from the ‘23 version). Engineers focused on improving aesthetics, user interface, and honing performance with a careful series of modifications.

A new 5-inch color TFT dash is a huge improvement. It can be paired via Bluetooth with iOS- or Android-powered smartphones.Yamaha

Editor’s note: We test rode the MT-09 upon its last major overhaul during the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 MC Commute Review and Yamaha Builds A Better Triumph - 2021 MT-09 Review articles and videos. We also reviewed the up-spec SP variation during the Yamaha MT-09 SP Review write-up and video.

Improved switch gear with better tactile function is another huge upgrade for MT-09 riders.Yamaha

The MT-09 continues to be powered by a sweet-sounding 890cc liquid-cooled inline-three. Engine character is boosted with “acoustic amplifier grilles” atop the fuel tank cover, like the MT-10.

The MT-09 continues to be powered by a liquid-cooled 890cc triple, however it boasts a faster electronic quickshifter.Yamaha

This engine delivers strong and responsive performance, with plenty of torque throughout the rev range. It’s good for around 117 hp and 65 lb.-ft. torque. It puts power back via a cable-actuated wet multiplate slipper clutch and six-speed gearbox. The electronic quickshifter is redesigned and offers faster response during up- and downshifts, presumably like the 2024 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+.

For ‘24 this Yamaha triple features a new LED headlight and a sharp-looking (and lower positioned) fuel tank (capacity is unchanged at 3.7 gallons) affording a modern and muscular appearance.

The 2024 MT-09 sports new ergonomics with a lower handlebar, shorter fuel tank, and more rearward positioned rider foot controls.Yamaha

The twin-spar alloy frame returns, which helps keep weight low and contributes to its excellent handling characteristics. The suspension has been recalibrated and continues to be adjustable for preload, compression (fork), and rebound damping, allowing riders to fine-tune their settings for their preferred riding style. Steering radius has also been increased by four degrees on either side enhancing maneuverability at parking-lot speeds. Lastly, the MT-09 rolls on Bridgestone’s new-and-improved Battlax S23 sport rubber.

The MT-09 continues to employ a ride-by-wire throttle system and adds three global riding modes (Sport, Street, Rain). Users also can tweak traction, wheelie, and ABS brake control. Cruise control is now standard as are self-canceling LED turn signals.

In the braking department the MT benefits from a radial-mount Brembo master cylinder that controls the dual 298mm disc brakes with four-piston radial-mount calipers. Fixed, always-on and lean-sensitive ABS returns. Furthermore, new Back Slip Regulator (BSR) programming reduces engine torque during braking to help mitigate rear wheel lock-up during aggressive braking in low grip conditions. The setting can be manually disabled, if desired.

Perhaps the most welcome is the larger 5-inch color TFT display paired to the improved switch gear, which the 2024 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+ adopted. The display can be paired via Bluetooth to iOS- or Android-enabled smartphones.

Ergonomically the MT-09 offers a lower and two-way-adjustable position handlebar. The rider’s foot controls shift rearward and are also adjustable. All told, the MT-09 gains 8 pounds versus its predecessor and will be available in two colors at US Yamaha Motor dealerships March 2024.
