In the world of electric motorcycles, Stark Future’s Varg MX is the benchmark all competitors aspire to, especially in the dirt bike segment. With up to 80 hp, a bespoke chassis, premium design, and a list of technological patents that give Tesla a run for its money, Stark set the standard with its all-electric motocrosser, but this week the Barcelona-based manufacturer confirmed it is taking the fight to the streets with a new road-legal Varg EX dual sport.
At a glance the new Varg EX enduro appears to be little more than a Varg MX with a headlight, but according to Stark Future’s preliminary press release, these are two significantly different machines. While many of the core engineering features of Stark’s original model remain, the Varg EX has been thoroughly reworked for use on trails and the roads that connect them.
Take the battery, for instance. The Vark EX’s air-cooled and magnesium-cased battery is still a structural component of the frame, but its capacity has increased to 7.2kWh for a claimed 20 percent increase in range. Stark says this will grant the Varg EX up to a full hour of additional ride time for a maximum of six hours of use between charges.

Of course that increase in battery capacity also translates to an increase in recharge times, however according to Stark’s specs, the differences are negligible. Where the Varg MX’s 6.5kWh battery took 1.8 hours to charge from 0–100 percent, Stark claims the Varg EX’s 7.2kWh cell takes two hours even, or roughly an extra 10 minutes when plugged into the same 240V outlet.
Suspensionwise, the Varg EX sports the same closed-cartridge fork and fully adjustable shock from KYB, but both components have been reworked specifically for enduro use. Overall travel has been reduced to 11.8 inches front and rear, and damping settings have been tuned by KYB for off-track conditions.
As for the chassis itself, Stark says the Varg EX’s frame has also been significantly reworked for increased vertical flex in the rear and lateral flex in the front. The goal here, according to Stark, is to give the EX a plusher, more forgiving ride than their motocrosser as well as better cornering grip and control overall.
The EX also sports a unique layout for the rear suspension linkage, which Stark says gives the bike a 60mm (2.4 inches) ground clearance advantage over their KTM competitors. Additional protection from rocks and the like are provided by Stark’s patented polymer skid plate as well as a new chain guide that increases lateral stiffness by a whopping 266 percent while only adding 13 grams over the Varg MX’s hardware.
Innovations continue on the Varg EX’s “street legal” package. The LED headlamp, for example, cranks out an impressive 4,000 lumens of brightness for nighttime riding despite its minimalist shape.
The blinkers are a patented design as well, and are made from highly durable yet flexible optical silicone to survive the constant abuse of hard enduro and woods riding. That same “durability meets flexibility” ethos extends to the Varg EX’s hand guards as well, which Stark claims are the “lightest hand guards in the world.”
Further improvements have been made in the technology department as well, and Stark says the Varg EX’s removable Arkenstone Stark Phone dash now includes an industry first in the form of integrated GPS navigation and trail recording. A litany of other features are included in the touchscreen dash as well, including on-the-go adjustments for power, engine-braking, and brake regen settings.
Despite the abundance of new features, Stark fans will be pleased to learn that the Varg EX’s powerful water-cooled carbon-sleeve electric motor is carried over from the motorcrosser, and will again be offered in both 60 and 80 hp configurations. Other innovations are carried over as well including integrated rear grab handles, Stark’s patented lightweight footpegs, and a single-tool chain adjuster at the rear axle.
Stark has also confirmed that numerous factory configurations will be offered for the EX including handlebar- or footpeg-mounted brake levers as well as multiple options for wheel and tire sizes. Exact production and delivery dates have yet to be announced, but Stark has confirmed that the new Varg EX will have a starting MSRP of $12,900 for the standard 60 hp version and $13,900 for the full 80 hp configuration.
“The Varg EX embodies everything we stand for at Stark Future,” said Anton Wass, CEO and
founder of Stark Future. “It’s designed to challenge and inspire the motorcycle industry to embrace sustainability by proving that electric technology can outperform gas in every aspect. With the Varg EX, we’re creating a bike that opens up new possibilities for riders, whether it’s conquering trails, commuting through the city or simply riding anywhere, anytime.”
