Zero SR/F Electric Motorcycle First Look

Zero Motorcycles has announced the launch of the SR/F, the most powerful electric bike released to date in its line. It's also one of the most technologically sophisticated, packed with the new Cypher III operating system and touted as the first fully "smart" machine from the brand.

The SR/F is moved by a new ZF75-10 motor powered by a ZF14.4 lithium-ion battery, providing 140 pound-feet of torque and 110 hp. There will be Standard and Premium versions of the bike available, and both boast these figures. Zero claims the SR/F will reach a top speed of 124 mph and sustain speed at 110 mph.

A big difference between Standard and Premium options comes in the charger type and time to charge. The Standard is equipped with a 3.0-kW integrated charging system, while the Premium carries a 6.0-kW system. A full charge on the Standard without a Rapid Charge System upgrade is 4.5 hours while on the Premium it’s 2.5 hours. With the RCS system installed, those figures reduce to 1.8 hours and 1.5 hours, respectively. If you are fine with a 95 percent charge, the RCS system will provide that in an hour.

As for the “smart” portion, the Cypher III operating system is a hub system monitoring all the SR/F’s functions. That includes Bosch Motorcycle Stability Control to the dash display. Cypher III transmits a wealth of information to the rider in four main areas: bike status and alerts, charging information, ride data sharing, and system upgrade and update notification. The bike status portion alerts riders of tip-overs, charging interruptions, and also has a find-my-bike function. In the charging category, riders can select charging parameters. The ride data share portion provides detailed information about past rides, and the system upgrade function allows riders to remotely download operating system updates to ensure all systems are working at optimal levels.

The Bosch MSC system offers straight-line and cornering ABS, traction control, and torque control. There are four ride modes installed—Street, Sport, Eco, and Rain—and 10 rider-programmable modes.

In terms of the mechanical elements, a fully adjustable Showa 43mm Big Piston Separate Function fork and 40mm Showa shock come on both versions, along with J.Juan braking hardware. Each rolls on Pirelli Diablo Rosso III tires and comes with a two-year warranty. The power packs on both the Standard and Premium are covered for five years, no matter the mileage.

The additional charging equipment on the Premium does add to the overall weight of the machine however. The Premium SR/F tips the scales at 498 pounds according to Zero, while the Standard is listed as weighing 485 pounds. You also get some creature comforts on the Premium including a fly screen, heated grips and aluminum bar ends.

The price for the Standard starts at $18,995 while the Premium SR/F will cost $20,995. There are Seabright Blue and Boardwalk Red colorways to choose from, and both models will be available this spring.
