Overview

The important thing to know about the Yamaha MT-07 is that it was always intended to be a really good, inexpensive bike. The second, and perhaps more important, thing to know is that its performance and fun factor far exceed the expectations you might have of a budget-conscious middleweight naked bike. This is not just a great bike for the money—it’s a great bike, period.

Introduced as an FZ in 2014, the 07 is built around Yamaha’s user-friendly, yet wickedly entertaining, 689cc parallel-twin engine, which uses a 270-degree crankshaft for a similar sound and feel to a 90-degree V-twin. Whereas 180-degree parallel twins are known as practical and efficient, Yamaha proved that a bike like the MT-07, with its 270-degree twin, could also be pleasant-sounding and fun, regardless if you’re a new rider, commuter, or experienced motorcyclist looking for something that’ll keep you entertained without breaking the bank.

The MT-07’s aggressive styling looks all the more fitting in Yamaha’s Matte Raven Black color. If it looks like the handlebar is tall and wide, that’s because Yamaha raised and lengthened the bar in 2021, for more leverage and space in the cockpit.Yamaha

Immediate success meant Yamaha never needed to massively overhaul the engine. Euro 5 emissions regulations did, however, warrant the move to a new intake system and redesigned exhaust in 2021. The 2021 model-year update also included redesigned transmission gears for reduced drivetrain lash—a small but noticeable issue on earlier-generation models.

The end result is an engine that prioritizes low-end grunt and a solid midrange. This makes the MT-07 a great companion for the urban jungle but also a lot of fun on tight, twisty canyon roads. The twin-cylinder feels relaxed on the freeway, only starting to get a little buzzy if the speed is pushed above 80 mph in sixth gear.

A relatively light, 406-pound curb weight contributes to a sense of agility perfect for navigating city streets or ripping up a backroad, while a taller and wider handlebar (also introduced in 2021) offers excellent leverage and a relatively spacious cockpit. This is not a small motorcycle, but compact packaging and a low, 31.7-inch seat height means riders with a short inseam or limited riding background will feel fully in control. Larger riders will be comfortable, even if they aren’t the primary demographic engineers had in mind when they developed the MT.

Speaking of mixed sizes and backgrounds, the MT-07′s suspension and braking packages strike a nice middle ground. The KYB fork is nonadjustable and the KYB shock has adjustment for spring preload and rebound damping, but the units do an admirable job of offering necessary support while still being plush for around-town riding. Suspension performance isn’t anything to write home about as the pace picks up, but small changes like thicker fork oil have proven beneficial for larger or more aggressive riders.

The MT-07’s aggressive styling might not be for everyone, but there’s no denying the bike’s ability to stand out from the competition.Yamaha

Similarly, a move to larger, 298mm front brake discs in 2021 led to even more braking performance, giving newer MT’s a bit of an edge at corner entry. Unfortunately, or not depending on your passion for modern electronic rider aids, the bike is only outfitted with ABS and doesn’t use an IMU for lean-angle-sensitive braking support. There’s no traction control or wheelie control either, meaning the competition has a leg up in terms of electronics.

Luckily, Yamaha did outfit the 2023 MT-07 with a 5-inch TFT display that suits the bike’s very modern and very aggressive look. The compact headlight, albeit unique, allows the entire front of the bike to be pulled closer to the fork, giving the MT-07 a compact look.

All LED lighting is a thankful touch too.

All this adds up to a bike that is still stylish and simple, but with a touch of modernity and loads of character. A fun and user-friendly bike that works well for new or experienced riders alike.

Pricing and Variants

Given that Yamaha’s emphasis is on affordable and practical options, there are no up-spec versions of the MT-07. The bike is available in a base package for $8,199, in three color options: Matte Raven Black, Team Yamaha Blue, or the more eye-catching Midnight Cyan.
