The MT-09 is the original Hyper Naked in Yamaha's not-so-secret society of aggressive-looking and fun-to-ride streetbikes. From start to finish the MT-09 was designed around the rowdy 847cc triple with crossplane crank and a chassis that is very accommodating for riders of all levels. Over the years the MT-09 has evolved into one of the best bangs for the buck in the streetfighter or naked bike class.
Just one look and you know this is a MT-model thanks to its aggressive “mass forward” stance, angular front end and distinctive bodywork. When you hear it rush past you there is also no mistaking the unique sound of its triple-cylinder engine that has been tuned for low- to midrange torque. If you’ve been following the Hyper Naked marketing and development over the years, you might already know that the “MT” stands for Maximum Torque on all four of the models. It is the resulting rowdy-looking, street-rider-friendly character that Yamaha hopes is appealing for riders who are looking for a bike that doesn’t quite look or feel like any of the competition
There’s more to the MT-09 than just an exciting engine too. The control-filled cast aluminum frame features swoopy lines and the braced swingarm that incorporates a horizontal placement of the Monocross shock to create a responsive-handling chassis. A fully adjustable 41mm inverted fork along with a preload- and rebound-adjustable shock smooths out most back city roads and backcountry byways that you might run across during your travels.
A variety of rider assist functions begins with the YCC-T controlled D-Mode throttle mapping that allows for two separate levels of throttle response to choose from. Traction Control also offers two modes plus the ability to be turned off completely. A tidy-looking LCD dash that is similar to the other Hyper Naked models allows you to monitor the changes while also having access to the standard gauges including speedo, tach, fuel, gear position, and warning lights.
Speaking of lights, the four LED headlights that create the in-your-face look of the MT-09 are designed to offer incredible penetration through the darkness ahead. As long as the rider is comfortable it won't matter if they are riding in the day or night so Yamaha has gone through a lot of effort to create a motorcycle that is easy to ride on quick trips or long journeys. A long, flat seat is perfect for two people while the one-piece handlebar and low-set footpegs provide the type of riding position that new and returning riders are always looking for. There's not a lot of wind protection from the minuscule headlight pod, but there are worse fates than being blasted by a little wind while you're riding a motorcycle.
Yamaha offers a nice selection of accessories to help customize the MT-09 to suit your needs. This includes a taller windscreen, luggage, and even a quickshifter. This latest version of the MT-09 will be available in Ice Fluo, Matte Raven Black, or Team Yamaha Blue colorways. MSRP is set at $8,999 for all three models and they will be available starting this November at a dealer near you.
