While we were watching Jack Miller win in the wet at Assen (click here for the 2016 Dutch GP race report), our colleague Don Canet from Motorcyclist's sister publication, Cycle World, was charging up the 12.4-mile Pikes Peak course in Colorado during the event's 100th anniversary. Charging is an apt description given that Don was on an electric bike, in this case a race-prepped Victory Empulse RR. Don's time of 10:17.813 won the eBike class, and was the second-fastest time of the day.
Don's success is no great surprise to anyone who has spent time with him. He is a veteran roadracer and journalist, with more racing and writing experience inside his helmet than Motorcyclist staffers Zack and Ari put together. We've always been impressed with his riding skill and encyclopedic track memory, both of which must have come in handy while climbing Pikes. Every time any of us sit next to Don on a press event we hear an outstanding story of motorcycling, from top-speed attempts to racing Daytona on a stock bike—and using the factory tool kit to change tires! Congrats, Don, on another epic story for the Canet library.
