As a prelude to our supersized sportbike shootout (see On Two Wheels: Class of 2015 Superbike Shootout), we thought it would be interesting to do a quick numerical comparison of how the three hottest numbers—the BMW S1000RR, Ducati 1299 Panigale S, and Yamaha YZF-R1—stack up in our usual performance testing at the dyno, on the scale, and down the drag strip. The data gathering is done for these three (we added the Aprilia RSV4 RF and Kawasaki ZX-10R to the big test) and what you see here offers a tantalizing preview of the Class of 2015 shootout.

The quarter-mile sprint brings us beyond the purely academic predictions of performance and into the realm of real-world acceleration, telling us how well the powertrain and chassis cooperate to put power to pavement. It looks like all three manufactures have done the job well, with E.T.s aligned with power output.©Motorcyclist
