The FIM and Dorna have released the provisional 2021 MotoGP Championship schedule. It includes 20 rounds that are, at this point, all pending. Changes may need to be made depending on the state of the COVID-19 pandemic and any government restrictions that may be in place as a result.
Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta offered these remarks in a MotoGP press release:
"We try to return to normality; we talked to all the promoters and made the normal calendar because it’s important to block the days and to know exactly on which days there will be the Grands Prix. We’ll start in Qatar as usual, and finish in Valencia as usual for another year. And in the middle, there will be 18 Grands Prix together with the first and the last. We hope we can do it. Obviously, there are many things we don’t know yet, that’s why we’ve included three reserve Grands Prix to be allocated wherever it’s possible and also taking into consideration the weather considerations of each place.
“The most important thing for me and the message I want to give is that we will try and maintain the days with a Grand Prix on those days.”
The three reserve Grands Prix that Ezpeleta mentions are Portimão in Portugal, Mandalika in Indonesia, and Igora Drive Circuit in Russia.
Another point to note is the absence of Brno. Ezpeleta went on to explain that talks with the circuit have been, and will continue to be, ongoing. The issue comes down to the deteriorating safety of the circuit. Brno has not resurfaced its course in some time, and the Safety Commission has deemed it necessary before MotoGP racing can return. At the time of the calendar release, it’s still not clear whether Brno will be able to meet the requirements to be included in the 2021 schedule.
Beyond Brno, the July 11 race in Finland at KymiRing remains subject to homologation.
