Due to the growing concerns over the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Gran Premio Motul de la República Argentina round of the 2020 MotoGP season has been postponed and moved to November 22, 2020. This comes hot on the heels of the cancellation of the 2020 MotoGP season opener at Qatar and the postponement of the Grand Prix of the Americas in Texas just a few hours earlier. The 2020 MotoGP season will now commence May 3 at the Jerez circuit in Spain.
Here is the translated official statement as released by the International Circuit of Termas de Río Hondo website: “From yesterday until noon, active meetings were held between authorities of the government of Santiago del Estero together with the representative of the OSD Group Orly Terranova and CEO of Dorna, Carmelo Ezpeleta, to make a final decision regarding the advance of COVID-19 and its direct consequences on sports spectacles of massive occurrence. The virus remains a worldwide alert as several countries have even closed their borders. At last this morning an agreement has been reached between the parties involved. The consensus is that the Grand Prix of the Argentine Republic will be held on a new date, November 20–22, 2020.”
As the 2020 racing calendar and other sporting events around the world continue to be hampered by the coronavirus outbreak, we urge fans to be patient and understanding of the governing bodies’ desire to protect their fellow humans both in the paddock and the stands.
We have to assume more changes are looming but as it stands now, the series is shaping up to be a brutal test of attrition for the competitors who are now looking at a much more condensed schedule that is extending closer to the rainy season at the end of the calendar year. If these races actually take place, you better believe this turn of events will shake things up a bit. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
