Kawasaki’s tried-and-true KLR650 is a go-to option for motorcyclists seeking a capable, reliable, and inexpensive dual sport adventure motorcycle. And after years of customer’s begging for technical updates, Team Green answers with a mild refresh in the 2022 KLR650. The best part? Its MSRP remains unchanged at $6,699, which represents true value in this segment.
The ’22 version continues to source a liquid-cooled 652cc single that gains fuel injection, making carburetor jetting tweaks based on elevation and climate a thing of the past.
Different camshaft profiles and a modified exhaust boost midrange torque. The five-speed transmission receives attention in the form of new clutch mechanism bearings, an upgraded third gear, and a special “finishing treatment” for fourth and fifth gears. Other improvements include a sealed lead-acid battery and “revised” ignition components.
A new subframe design enhances overall frame torsional stiffness and a longer swingarm extends wheelbase. The KLR continues to roll on a 21-inch front spoked hoop and a 17-inch rear, stamped from stronger material to help resist dings and bends when striking rocks. Both axles are larger in diameter which further enhance rigidity and durability. The swingarm pivot shaft is also thicker too. Lastly, a larger-diameter cross-drilled brake disc was fitted and the rear disc is stamped from thicker alloy to resist fade for back brake draggers. A 1.18-inch-shorter kickstand helps mitigate tip-overs on uneven terrain.
Of all the improvements, the ergonomic upgrades are likely the most noticeable. Specifically the handlebar and footpegs position equate to a more open cockpit. Both components also now include rubber mounts to mitigate unwanted engine vibration. The shape of the fuel tank was tweaked to be more compatible with the rider’s knees. A new fuel pump design increases usable fuel tank volume, slightly.
Other creature-comfort improvements include a reshaped and nearly 2-inch-taller windscreen that offers two-position adjustment. The rider’s saddle is also said to be more comfortable and the passenger grab handles have been modified to make them easier to hold on to.
The KLR also wears new body panels to help give it a more modern appearance in theme with vehicles like the Z400 ABS. All LED lighting also graces the KLR as does a digital instrument cluster and longer-arm rearview mirrors.
