After an unprecedented 2020 Monster Energy Supercross season, which saw teams fit the better part of the full season into the span of a few weeks, Feld Entertainment is hoping for a more traditionally staged series in 2021. It won’t be exactly the same as pre-COVID times, but there will be a bit more variety than the Salt Lake mega-series of last year.

The 2021 Monster Energy Supercross includes 17 rounds and six cities. The opener is planned to happen in Houston on January 16, with the two following rounds also taking place in Houston. Then the series will travel to Indianapolis for two rounds, after which riders will battle through three rounds in Glendale, Arizona, before heading off to Daytona. Arlington, Texas, is up after that followed by a four-round stint that is TBD with regard to location. The series will wrap up with a finale in Salt Lake City.

Tickets will go on sale starting December 8. Spectators will be welcomed back to see the action in person, following the appropriate local, state, and federal COVID guidelines.

“This schedule demonstrates the combative spirit of Feld Entertainment, the AMA, and the FIM to take on the challenge and is a statement of our common hope for a better world in the near future,” said Jorge Viegas, FIM president, in a company press release. “Hardcore fans may be hungry for ‘more,’ but with the pandemic situation, it is a realistic calendar. Competition starts mid-January under COVID-19 restrictions until Easter. Afterward, hopefully, we can return to a more ‘traditional’ scenario. So, riders, sponsors, and the industry can now prepare for 2021 and the fans also know when they can get in ‘Supercross mode.’”

“In 2020, Feld Entertainment, the AMA, and all our partners, and of course the racers and teams, worked tirelessly and innovatively to crown champions amid a global pandemic,” said Rob Dingman, AMA president and CEO. “The lessons learned will guide the management team as it delivers another incredible season of racing while ensuring that all COVID-19 precautions are met and fans get the show that they have come to expect from AMA Supercross.”

Fans will remember that last year, during the “bubble” races in Utah, the competition expanded to include mid-week races. The popularity of these events has prompted organizers to introduce SuperTuesday races in Houston, Arlington, Glendale, and Indianapolis. From a business point of view, it put Supercross action on television screens at a “non-traditional” time, which helped to boost the series' ratings overall.

Feld continues to explore options for the location of the four rounds leading up to the finale and will announce details once it’s able to nail down a venue.
