Kawasaki announces the return of its peppy Z400 ABS ($4,999) for the 2021 riding season. Based off of the Ninja 400, the Z is designed for riders who desire a more upright riding position, without a conventional front fairing and windscreen.
It continues to be powered by a liquid-cooled 399cc parallel-twin engine that’s good for just over 44 ponies at the business end of the Dunlop GPR-300 rubber. The engine drinks fuel from a generous 3.7-gallon fuel tank. Power is transferred through a manual six-speed gearbox and chain final drive. Adjustable-position brake and clutch levers make it easy to get comfortable at the controls whether you’re a big- or small-handed person.
The chassis and suspension components are also shared with the Ninja albeit for slightly softer fork and shock springs which are theoretically more accommodating for lighter folks. Based off our experience, however, during the 2019 Kawasaki Ninja 400 ABS versus Z400 ABS comparison, the difference is negligible.
What isn’t trivial is the Z bike’s above average ride quality whether riding over bumpy surfaces on the way to work or when riding at a fast clip around twisty stretches of tarmac. LED lighting and ABS are also welcome standard features helping the Kawi rider stay safe day and night.
MSRP remains unchanged, however it has moved up by $200 since its introduction for the 2019 model year.
