Honda recently unveiled its new CRF300L Rally and CRF300L, both slated for international markets in 2021. We covered the upgrade details of the CRF300L in another preview, so here we’ll be taking a look at the Rally model.
At its heart is the same 286cc single powering the 300L, designed to provide more midrange power and pull than the outgoing 250L thanks to changes in the intake and exhaust systems. Gearing is changed, shortening first through fifth gears while sixth gear is taller for better cruising performance. The cooling system is optimized to keep temps low in a variety of on- and off-road conditions, and a primary balancing shaft helps to reduce engine vibration. The Rally also gets a slip and assist clutch for smoother downshifts and lighter clutch pull.
The Rally gets the new, lighter-weight semi-double cradle steel frame and aluminum swingarm as well. The Showa suspension setup is the same as the 300L, though the braking package is slightly changed with a larger, 296mm front brake disc. The Rally also carries a larger fuel tank than the 300L.
Where the Rally stands apart is in the styling and equipment. Its looks are derived from the CRF450 Rally with a “floating” windscreen, shrouds, and upper/lower fairing all developed in the style of Honda’s competition machine. Hand guards and a skid plate provide further protection from flying debris.
The rubber-mounted seat is slightly taller than the 300L as well. Ergonomic updates such as lowered footpegs and updated handlebar sweep make the bike easier to ride in off-road situations. The Rally carries internal handlebar weights to help reduce vibrations. The LCD instrument display is updated also, with larger speedometer numbers and lighter overall weight. LED lighting is used in the headlight and indicators.
There’s no word yet on when the CRF300L Rally will make its stateside debut.
