The 2020 BMW S 1000 RR is among the vanguard of liter-size superbikes. As one of the most finely crafted and technologically sophisticated motorcycles in its segment, the S 1000 RR has a lot to live up to, particularly as its European and Japanese competition continues to advance. For 2020, the bike was given a major overhaul, reducing overall weight by a claimed 25 pounds thanks to an improved 999cc inline-four and a slimmer, smaller chassis inspired by World Superbike development. The engine updates alone have given the Bavarian missile more than 180 hp and nearly 80 pound-feet of torque measured at the rear wheel.
That power is more accessible than ever thanks to a suite of ride modes and electronic settings aimed at providing optimal performance in a variety of conditions. During his first ride on the new model, Road Test Editor Michael Gilbert found the machine more agreeable than ever. "Minimal handlebar input decks the S 1000 RR to the right, where it carves a tight line through Estoril's second-gear first corner. The German manufacturer didn't want just a faster literbike, it wanted one that's lighter and easier to ride."
"As both an introductory effort and a portent of what it's likely unleashed in the marketplace," editors began, the 2010 BMW S 1000 RR is the "most beautiful thing to blow out of Bavaria since Beethoven." And in '17, the HP4 Race went a step further with a carbon-fiber frame.
