2018 Harley-Davidson Softail Street BobCRS

New for 2018, the nine-model Softail lineup starts with this Street Bob model and works up from there with different themes and variations. The Street Bob wraps a counterbalanced 107ci Milwaukee-Eight engine in a stiff new chassis whose “Softail” rear suspension hides the adjustable shock (originally under the gearbox but now under the seat) to give the look of a prewar rigid-frame bike. The system works so well that the Softail nameplate has developed immense loyalty since it became a staple of H-D’s lineup in 1984.

Fast-forward to 2018, and the new Street Bob is a formidable machine, thanks to its rangy 64.2-inch wheelbase, large-diameter 19-inch front wheel, the Big Twin engine, and a hefty 653-pound curb weight. The machine also has a stretched-out riding position, due to forward-mounted footpegs and a tall apehanger handlebar. Fortunately, the low 26.8-inch seat allows different-size riders to master the machine. In sum, the Street Bob packages together Harley-Davidson’s latest Big Twin in the best Softail chassis yet, producing a retro look, attitude, and functionally all in one.

Likes: The new chassis, counterbalanced Milwaukee-Eight motor, and LED front lighting bring the Street Bob nicely up to date.

Dislikes: Apehangers.

Verdict: H-D has invested heavily in making the new Big Twin the best big twin. And the Street Bob is the most affordable way to get on board.
