The natural beauty of Ouray, nestled in the San Juan Loop of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado was bathed in morning sunlight and cast a stunning backdrop and forward thinking view to the 3rd Women's Motorcycle Summit hosted by the S.T.R.O.N.G. Women of the Steel Horse Sisterhood June 9th through 11th.
The event, featuring the first America's Summit Challenge, could not have turned out more perfect. Over 65 women riders took to the highways encompassing westward Moab, Utah, eastward Grand Junction, and southward Durango, both located in beautiful Colorado. 1st America's Summit Challenge featured prime riding areas we have all heard the names of: Hwy 128, also known as the Upper Colorado River Scenic Byway including part of the Dinosaur Diamond Prehistoric Highway; the Colorado National Monument; The Grand Mesa; the Black Canyon of the Gunnison; Scenic Hwy 145 following the San Miguel River to Telluride; and of course, the infamous Million Dollar Highway. The western Colorado setting perfectly complemented this year's theme of the event.
The S.T.R.O.N.G. Women of the Steel Horse Sisterhood reflected their ambitious mission of inspiring growth in women's lives and in the sport of women & motorcycling by hosting this summit. Women who registered to compete in the Summit Challenge were provided a 92-page "Clue Book" containing over 70 fascinating waypoints. An inspiring photo shoot in Ridgeway, located on a river's edge surrounded by "Legends of the West", an old western movie set and featuring renowned photographer, Marla Rutherford drew the participation of over 35 women riders. The Steel Horse Sisterhood big top tent was where the action happened once ladies were "off the road". Base camped at Twin Peaks Lodge & Hot Springs at the foot of the Million Dollar Highway, the featured location provided the setting for the female participants to enjoy their off time, sharing meals, entertainment, live music and the silent auction. Lifetime friendships were forged. Star performers, inspiring keynote speakers and challenging riding to discover the locations, obvious and hidden, requiring GPS coordinates once competition began, was the norm throughout this event.
Keynote speakers Joan Krenning, of Steel Horse Sisterhood, Pat Jacques, ADV Woman , June Cline, of Make it a Great Ride, and Sandy Aguilera, of Star Concepts , gave inspirational and challenging presentations. The fact that these women are all risk takers, visionaries in their fields as well as seasoned motorcyclists became evident to all in attendance.
"Women are not undergoing evolution or revolution but a metamorphosis." It is a time to be visionary now, more than ever. It is a time for women to share all of their visions for innovative change to help create a world devoid of domestic violence and sexual abuse.
