Yamaha has once again raised the bar for naked bike enthusiasts with the 2024 MT-09 SP ($12,299). Building on the success of its predecessor, this 2024 SP variation continues as a special-edition, high-spec version of the already impressive MT-09, delivering an enhanced riding experience for those craving a more premium middleweight naked bike.

Editor’s note: We reviewed the previous MT-09 iteration during the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 MC Commute Review and Yamaha Builds A Better Triumph - 2021 MT-09 articles and videos.

“We want to position the SP model as a premium option for the rider looking for more aggressive performance from their bike,” says Aaron Bast, street motorcycle senior product planner. “While the MT-09 SP does everything the MT-09 does, it offers the rider a more premium bike with more aggressive performance.

“There are three targets we set out to achieve with the SP: to elevate performance, offer next-level specification, and deliver Yamaha’s next level of design and premium identity,” Bast continues.

Priced at a $1,700 premium over the standard MT-09, the 2024 SP model is equipped with top-tier components, including an updated four-way-adjustable KYB fork and an Öhlins shock absorber, complete with a remote preload adjuster for quick ride-height changes. Also of note is how this fork employs an independent twin cartridge design versus the standard model which splits compression and rebound damping between each fork leg. This enhanced KYB hardware provides a plush and controlled ride, while also delivering superior road holding, elevating the MT-09 SP’s handling beyond its counterpart—especially at lean.

“It allows for more precise adjustments,” says Gerrad Capley, street motorcycle communications specialist, regarding the upgraded suspension. “You have high-speed and low-speed compression adjustment on the fork, and a wider range of adjustments—something like between one and 11 clicks on the standard for rebound. The SP, on the other hand, offers between one and 26 clicks of rebound damping adjustment.”

Still, four-time AMA superbike champion Josh Hayes admits it was difficult for him to feel a difference:

“As a guy who’s compared things back-to-back for a long time. It felt very familiar to me [from the last time I rode] a MT-09. It’s hard to tell not back-to-back,” says Hayes. “But I am an Öhlins man at heart, so you know I know the quality of it and being able to have some extra adjustment. The size of the shaft and everything is a little bit bigger so it will probably manage to hold up over time a little bit better also.”

Stylistically, the SP stands out from the standard model with a sleek, polished swingarm reminiscent of the YZF-R1M, and a sophisticated Liquid Raven livery, further distinguishing it from the base model.

We love the throaty and smooth running character of Yamaha’s 890cc CP3 powerplant.David Schelske

At the heart of the MT-09 SP is Yamaha’s revamped 890cc CP3 inline-triple engine, which impresses with its smooth power delivery and refined character. Producing 107 hp and upward of 60 lb.-ft. torque, this engine has clearly been fine-tuned for a balance of performance and usability. Yamaha’s engineers drew inspiration from Triumph’s acclaimed triple engines, achieving a similar blend of throaty sound and linear power, but with far less vibration, making it enjoyable to ride at any speed.

The engine drinks from a lower-profile and smallish, 3.7-gallon fuel tank that offers a range of only 129.5 miles based on our measured 35 mpg average.

The third-generation bidirectional quickshifter is a standout feature, offering seamless up- and downshifts that keep the bike stable even when leaned over, enhancing cornering performance. The improved suspension setup plays a crucial role in the SP’s elevated agility, making it feel nimble and confident through twisty sections of road. The suspension not only absorbs road imperfections well, but also allows riders to fine-tune it to their exact preferences, offering an unparalleled level of setup for a naked bike.

As with previous models, the 2024 MT-09 SP comes equipped with a suite of rider aids, including traction control, slide control, wheelie control, engine-brake control, and cruise control. It also features a larger 5-inch color TFT display, and the chunky switch gear makes vehicle adjustments a breeze.

Braking is managed by a set of triple disc brakes with ABS. Two braking modes, Brake Control 1 and Brake Control 2, allow for customization, with the latter offering cornering ABS functionality, though Yamaha doesn’t explicitly brand it as such. Rider’s can also manually disable rear ABS.

“The lightweight and rigid function of these Brembo Stylema calipers transfers energy to the brake rotors more effectively,” Capley shares of the jewelry-like front calipers. “And the added cooling helps mitigate brake fade if you’re riding aggressively on the track. The improved heat dissipation is due to a wider spot between the pads, which evacuates more heat.”

The radial-mount Brembo Stylema calipers are a huge upgrade. Not only do they offer improved power and feel, but brake fade, especially on track, is reduced.David Schelske

“But really, the bigger factor that adds to the power is the larger pistons,” he adds. “Instead of two 30.2mm pistons and two 27mm pistons like the standard bike, this one has four 30mm pistons all around.”

While the front braking prowess has been elevated, it would have been nice if Yamaha had fitted the bike with higher-quality stainless steel brake hoses. Still, the brakes work well on street and track and are a worthy improvement of the standard vehicle.

Yamaha’s MT-09 SP is one of the most well-rounded naked bikes we’ve ridden.David Schelske

The MT-09 SP excels in rider comfort with a flatter, two-piece seat and more sporty forward riding position. It feels more sportbike-like than before, but is still far from what we’d deem racy. This setup makes the bike suitable for both spirited rides and daily commutes, with excellent maneuverability in traffic and enough comfort for long rides. The position of the footpegs are also adjustable.

The updated LED headlight provides good visibility for nighttime riding, and the bike’s overall ergonomic design makes it easy to ride for extended periods without fatigue. Whether slicing through city traffic or tackling mountain roads, the MT-09 SP proves itself as a versatile all-rounder.

“We want to position the SP model as a premium option for the rider looking for more aggressive performance from their bike,” says Aaron Bast, street motorcycle senior product planner.David Schelske

Although primarily a streetbike, the MT-09 SP’s enhanced suspension and chassis make it more than capable on the track. During testing at a trackday event, the SP handled admirably, though it doesn’t quite match the razor-sharp focus of Yamaha’s dedicated YZF lineup. Still, it’s a blast to ride hard, demonstrating excellent cornering grip from the OE-fitted “M-spec” Bridgestone Battlax S23 tires and predictable handling.

The 2024 Yamaha MT-09 SP remains a standout in the naked bike category, offering a blend of performance, comfort, and style that’s hard to beat. With long service intervals—4,000 miles between engine oil changes and 26,600 miles between valve inspections—and its renowned build quality, the MT-09 SP is a purposeful naked bike for both street and occasional track use.

“You know, I think that for the features that you get, just the suspension upgrades I think are worth the $1,700,” Hayes sums up. “And then having a little bit of extra adjustability. I really like the paint scheme on it, so in my opinion if I were getting one, I would definitely be asking for the SP.”

With refined styling, enhanced suspension, and agile handling, the MT-09 SP justifies its premium price over the base model, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a top-tier naked bike experience. If you’re in the market for a vehicle that can handle everything from daily commutes to weekend canyon carving and the occasional trackday, the 2024 MT-09 SP deserves serious consideration.
