Fresh from Suzuki is its GSX-S1000GX+ ($18,499), an all-new entry into the growing adventure-sport class to compete with bikes like BMW Motorrad’s S 1000 XR. Suzuki aims to attract riders into its dealerships by offering a striking blend of performance, comfort, and technology. Built on the strong foundation of the GSX-S1000 platform, this model adds a host of features tailored for long-distance enthusiasts without sacrificing the exhilarating ride expected of a Suzuki.
The GSX-S1000GX+ commands attention with its sharp and aerodynamic design. The aggressive front fascia, complete with full-LED lighting, enhances visibility while exuding a modern and sporty appeal. The fairings are nicely integrated into the design, offering enhanced wind protection without compromising its sporty DNA. Its two-tone color and tasteful lines further complement its aesthetic.
At the heart of the GSX-S1000GX+ lies a 999cc inline-four engine derived from Suzuki’s legendary 2005–2006 generation GSX-R1000 superbike. Tuned for broader torque and smooth power delivery, the bike boasts pleasing acceleration and strong midrange performance. Whether carving through twisty roads or cruising on highways, the engine delivers confidence and excitement. Gearing is a tad on the short side and the powertrain is certainly showing its age with it being a tad buzzy compared to other more modern powertrains. Still, to be fair, it is certainly less vibey than its German-made counterpart.
With upwards of 135 ponies and over 73 lb.-ft. torque on tap at the twist grip, it’s equally capable of spirited rides and relaxed freeway rides. Three power modes let riders tune the powerband to their liking and the slick-shifting gearbox meshes quickly between each of the six cogs.
For the first time ever, Suzuki outfits its streetbike with semi-active suspenders from Showa. The suspension automatically adjusts compression and rebounding damping, in real time, based on road and rider control inputs. Suzuki’s Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.) ensures a customizable riding experience tailored to different road conditions.
With a push of a button riders can adjust shock preload, electronically based on vehicle load or rider preference. Front suspension preload changes have to be made the old-fashioned way with a 6mm Allen under the right fork leg. Paired with a twin-spar aluminum frame and responsive brakes, the bike offers excellent maneuverability and control making it feel much lighter than its 511-pound curb weight imparts. Triple disc hydraulic brakes keep speed in check and have an adequate power and brake feel at the lever and pedal.
The rider ergonomics are well calibrated, with raised handlebar and a comfortable seat, making it an excellent choice for longer rides. We also like the shape of the windscreen but wish it had manual adjustment. Although the footpegs are slightly more relaxed than its GSX-S1000GT sibling, GX+ retains ample cornering clearance and retains a sporty cockpit.
The GSX-S1000GX+ shines in its tech offerings. The 6.5-inch full-color TFT display is user-friendly and connects seamlessly to smartphones via Bluetooth for navigation, music, and call notifications. Rider aids include non-IMU-powered traction control, cornering ABS, cruise control, and a bidirectional electronic quickshifter. Heated grips would be a welcome addition, however they are available as a $454.95 accessory.
Designed with the long-distance rider in mind, the GX+ version includes standard lockable and removable hard cases with ample storage capacity swallowing over 7 gallons of cargo in each case, including a full-size Arai motorcycle helmet. Additional touring features include plastic hand guards, a USB-C charging port, and a comfortable pillion seat for a passenger. With a fuel tank capacity of 5 gallons we measured 34 mpg average netting nearly 170 miles between fill-ups.
Although priced competitively in its segment, the 2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX+ remains a tad expensive, considering its older powertrain architecture and other electronic features like tire pressure monitoring, heated seat, and backlit switch gear. Still, for those who desire the spirited performance of a sport-touring bike with more upright ergonomics, the GX+ is likely to be a good fit.
The GSX-S1000GX+ is a well-rounded machine that excels in offering performance, comfort, and advanced features (for a Suzuki) in a sleek package. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a dedicated tourer, this machine is a compelling choice that caters to a wide range of riders.
