2024 Suzuki GSX-8R Review With Videos

The parallel-twin sportbike segment continues to heat up with the introduction of Suzuki’s 2024 GSX-8R ($9,439). Not a true supersport but positioned adjacent to the GSX-R line of sport and superbikes, the 8R is a kinder, gentler sportbike designed for motorcyclists seeking an easy to live with streetbike.

The heart of the Suzuki GSX-8R is its 776cc parallel-twin engine (read the Suzuki Introduces 776cc Parallel-Twin Engine 2023 article), and it’s an absolute gem. This powertrain configuration is good for 74.01 hp at 8,380 rpm and 52.28 lb.-ft. torque at 5,580 revs. From the moment you twist the throttle, the engine provides a smooth and linear power delivery. It’s the perfect balance for both beginners and experienced riders.

Torque is readily available at low revs, making city riding a breeze, while the engine’s responsiveness on the open road adds an exciting element to the overall riding experience. The parallel-twin configuration with its 270-degree crankshaft configuration and unique twin counterbalancers (one for each cylinder) produces a distinctive exhaust note that adds to the bike’s character. The engine drinks from a 3.7-gallon fuel tank and we registered 39 mpg during the course of our ride at a moderate pace.

A slick-shifting quickshift-enabled six-speed gearbox makes for nearly effortless up- and downshifts without having to use the clutch. Cable-actuated clutch lever pull is well weighted, and the powertrain benefits from a slipper-action clutch to help mitigate rear wheel instability if you downshift in too low of a gear for vehicle speed.

What sets the GSX-8R apart is its super-easy handling. The slim steel frame and well-balanced chassis contribute to nimble and precise maneuverability. Whether you’re navigating tight city streets or leaning into corners on winding roads, the GSX-8R instills confidence. It responds eagerly to rider inputs, making it a joy to carve through turns. The upright riding position allows for excellent visibility, enhancing the overall sense of control. The addition of the front fairing helps shield the rider from the elements and is more well suited to freeway rides. The GSX-8R offers a relatively quiet and buffet-free ride behind the windscreen. Taller riders will likely want a higher windscreen however.

Suzuki has struck a comfortable balance with the GSX-8R’s ergonomics. The upright riding position is friendly for long days in the saddle and isn’t as demanding as its GSX-R cousins. In typical Suzuki form, the seat is well padded, and the clip-on-style handlebars are positioned in a way that reduces strain on the rider’s wrists and back. It’s a motorcycle that encourages riders to spend extended periods in the saddle without feeling worn out.

The GSX-8R’s suspension, while not damping adjustable, is exceptionally well tuned for both street and track use. The fork and strut absorb bumps and imperfections in the road, providing a comfortable ride. The setup strikes a good compromise between sporty handling and everyday comfort. It handles uneven surfaces and city potholes with ease, making it a versatile choice for different riding environments.

Equipped with ABS as standard, the GSX-8R’s braking system inspires confidence. The front brakes offer strong and progressive stopping power, and the ABS adds an extra layer of safety, particularly in less-than-ideal road conditions. The brake feel is responsive without being overly sensitive, contributing to a controlled riding experience.

The color 5-inch TFT instrument panel is clear and easy to read, providing essential information such as speed, rpm, and fuel level. It also includes the ability to tweak the three-way-adjustable traction control and engine power modes (Suzuki Drive Mode Selector).

The GSX-8R’s versatility is one of its standout features. It transitions seamlessly from city commuting to weekend canyon carving. The fuel efficiency is commendable, and the bike’s user-friendly nature makes it suitable for riders of varying skill levels. It’s a motorcycle that can adapt to different riding styles and preferences.
