Less than a year after launching the heavily revised 2013 FJR1300, Yamaha has announced a major update for the 2014 bike, dubbed the FJR1300ES. Electronically adjustable suspension (that’s where the “ES” comes from) will be fitted to next year’s model. An upside-down KYB fork now incorporates electronically adjustable damping, with multiple profiles, while the KYB shock offers electronic preload adjustment along with electronic damping response.
Four preload modes for the shock allow the rider to choose between solo, solo with luggage, two-up, or two-up with luggage presets. Damping adjustment comes in three modes—Soft, Standard, and Hard—each of which offers seven fine-tunable settings. Once you find your sweet spot, the FJR will remember personalized settings within the damping parameters, allowing easy toggling between the three modes.
A similarly equipped, electronically suspended FJR is already offered in Europe, but that Euro-spec bike is only available with Yamaha’s “electronic clutchless gear shift” system. All US-bound ES bikes will come equipped with the standard gearbox, though still with just five gears, not six.
A new and attractive Candy Red color option will make the 2014 FJRs easier to spot. The rest of the bike remains unchanged from 2013, and comes standard with traction control, variable drive modes, cruise control, heated grips, and adjustable seat, windshield, and leg vent panels. Pricing has been set at $16,890 for the ES model, a $1,000 premium over the “standard” FJR1300A. Look for the new FJR to arrive in Yamaha dealers starting in November.
