The R1M first came to light at the 2014 EICMA show as a 2015 model, complete with plenty of carbon fiber upgrades, upgraded engine, Öhlins semi-active suspension, and polished aluminum fuel tank and swingarm, resulting in a track weapon that deeply impressed us during our first ride in February 2015.

In 2020, Yamaha revamped the platform with improved electronics, revised crossplane engine, better aerodynamics, new ABS unit, and better suspension kit. During our on-road review of the revised machine, we found the bike to be at the top of its class, versatile enough to make dealing with the hazards of surface streets a breeze while retaining its high-performance, precise feel.
The 2024 edition carries forward these qualities, thanks to the MotoGP-derived crossplane 998cc four-cylinder mill, electronic Öhlins racing suspension, sophisticated electronics package, optimized aerodynamics, and weight-saving components like magnesium wheels, carbon fiber enhancements, and aluminum chassis parts.
