Hot on the heels of the announcement of the new and improved ‘24 MT-09 (read about it in the 2024 Yamaha MT-09 Preview article) the SP variation ($12,299, up $1,300 from the original 2021 model) also benefits from the same array of improvements.
Part of Yamaha’s popular MT (Master of Torque) streetbike series, known for its aggressive styling, punchy and charismatic power delivery, and modern electronic creature comforts, the SP naked bike should be considered for these reasons.
Editor’s note: We reviewed the MT-09 during its last major overhaul in the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 MC Commute Review and Yamaha Builds A Better Triumph - 2021 MT-09 Review articles and videos. We also tested the up-spec SP variation during the Yamaha MT-09 SP Review write-up and video.
The “SP” designation in the name signifies that this model is equipped with up-spec, fully adjustable suspension components. It benefits from an Öhlins rear shock and KYB inverted fork with stiffer spring rates designed for faster and/or heavier riders.
For ‘24, the MT-09 SP ditches the original Advics calipers for premium, jewelry-like Stylema-generation Brembo radial-mount calipers that pinch 298mm cross-drilled rotors. Fixed, always-on lean-angle-sensitive ABS also returns, but this time riders can opt to disable rear ABS, if desired.
The SP also gets a unique YZF-R1M-inspired paint job, with polished swingarm and blacked-out handlebar, control levers, and brake fluid master cylinder reservoir. Lastly, the mechanical key is replaced with a proximity-based key fob.
In summary, the 2024 Yamaha MT-09 SP is a more high-end middleweight-plus sized naked designed to go up against higher-spec European models, at a competitive price. The SP arrives in US Yamaha Motor dealers March 2024.
