Is the Suzuki GSX-8R Replacing the GSX-R600 and GSX-R750?

As many suspected and/or hoped, Suzuki unveiled the newest iteration of its GSX-8 platform, the 2024 Suzuki GSX-8R as announced at the EICMA Motorcycle Show. That “R” means a lot, spiritually connecting it to Suzuki’s legendary GSX-R sportbike platform. While the new-generation parallel-twin 776cc DOHC engine and 270-degree crankshaft ends the similarities right there, it’s the logical next step for an engine concept that points to the future of ICE-powered streetbikes. Looking at you, upcoming Euro 6 emissions standards.

This engine (read the Suzuki Introduces 776cc Parallel-Twin Engine 2023 article) has already taken its place in the reimagined V-Strom 800DE and made quite the splash at last year’s EICMA show. Identical to the mill in the GSX-8S, the 57.5 lb.-ft. of torque peaks at 6,800 rpm, but arrives several thousand rpm lower. The familiar 82 hp at 8,500 rpm isn’t exactly superbike spec, but the lighter weight and narrower engine means great agility and quicker steering transitions to help you put those ponies on pavement.

Spec-wise, it’s almost identical to the GSX-8S as far as dimensions. It gains 7 pounds and 1.2 inches of overall height due to fairings and bodywork, but otherwise gets the same 5-inch TFT LCD display as the GSX-8S, plus the same S.I.R.S. (Suzuki Intelligent Ride System) that provides rider aids like Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS), the Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS), Ride-by-wire Electronic Throttle System, Bi-directional Quick Shift System, Suzuki Easy Start System, and Low RPM Assist.

Obviously, the headlines here are the fairings and suspension. The same hexagonal LED headlight configuration now sits in bodywork that harkens to early-2000s-era GSX-Rs. And the full fairings provide a windshield, plus a modicum of lower body wind protection. It rides atop a fancy Showa SFF-BP inverted front fork, paired with a Showa link-type monoshock rear suspension with preload adjuster in back. Tires are the same as the GSX-8S, with 120/70-17 rubber up front and 180/55-17 in the rear.

A $9,439 MSRP tops the 2024 GSX-S by $440. More importantly it beats out the Honda CBR650R ($9,899 MSRP), but not the Yamaha YZF-R7 ($9,199 MSRP) or Kawasaki Ninja 650 ($8,899 MSRP with ABS). Probably not a deal breaker for most though. Last but not least, paint and livery options are Metallic Triton Blue, bright Metallic Matte Sword Silver, or bold Pearl Ignite Yellow paint scheme.
