Suzuki has announced a big move forward for its 400-level DR-Z line, with sweeping changes to its dual sport and supermoto models. We’ve covered the DR-Z4S dual sport in a separate article (which has a more detailed examination of the particulars of the revisions), so here we’ll take a quick look at the updates for the supermoto-styled DR-Z4SM.
Editor’s note: We last test rode the DR-Z4SM’s predecessor during the 2021 Suzuki DR-Z400SM MC Commute Review article and video.
As with the DR-Z4S, the Z4SM gets an almost entirely new 398cc single engine, complete with fuel injection, a Suzuki Clutch Assist System, ride-by-wire, updated exhaust, and numerous new parts throughout. Designers intended to maximize efficiency, meet Euro 5+ standards, and improve performance in one fell swoop.
The chassis is all new as well, with a steel pipe twin-spar frame and KYB suspension kit front and rear. Ride geometry is opened slightly to help make the bike more comfortable than before and the included ABS system offers selectable settings. For the Z4SM those ABS settings include Front and Rear ABS On, and Rear Off.
Additionally, the Z4SM will come with Suzuki’s Easy Start System and the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System, which handles the bike’s ride mode selection, traction control, ride-by-wire functionality, and ABS settings. As with the dual sport edition, The Z4SM will get three different ride mode options and four traction control settings, including the new Gravel mode. This particular setting is calibrated differently than on the Z4S, giving the Z4SM a higher spin tolerance in flat dirt conditions. Traction control can also be turned off completely to get the full motard experience.
The major difference between the Z4S and Z4SM is obviously at the wheels, with the supermoto rolling on two 17-inch wire-spoked rims and Dunlop Sportmax Q5A tires. The Z4SM gets shorter travel as well, with the fork offering 10.2 inches and the rear offering 10.9 inches. Ground clearance is a bit less as well at 10.2 inches, as is seat height at 35.0 inches.
The 2025 DR-Z4SM’s pricing and availability remain to be determined, but it will come in two colors including Sky Gray or Solid Special White No. 2.
