Malcolm Smith, a pioneering figure in motorcycling and a beloved ambassador of the sport (read the The Man Who Changed Motorcycling article), passed away peacefully at his home in Riverside, California, on November 26, 2024, at the age of 83.
Born on March 9, 1941, in Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada, Smith developed a passion for motorcycling at a young age. He began racing at 15, on a 1949 Matchless 500cc bike, in Southern California. But his association with Husqvarna motorcycles in the ‘60s propelled him to international acclaim. Smith’s illustrious off-road career includes eight gold medals in the International Six Day Trial between 1966 and 1976, seven overall victories in the Baja 1000 (three on bikes in ‘67, ‘69 and 1971 and four inside four-wheel vehicles during ‘74, ‘77, ‘82, and 1987). In 2000, he also won the Baja 2000, again in a truck and numerous wins in events including the Baja 500 and the Mint 400.
His charismatic presence and exceptional riding skills were immortalized in Bruce Brown’s 1971 documentary, On Any Sunday, where he starred alongside Steve McQueen and Mert Lawwill. The film, nominated for an Academy Award, inspired countless enthusiasts and showcased the spirit of motorcycling.
Beyond racing, Smith founded Malcolm Smith Racing (MSR), developing riding gear and accessories. His dealership, Malcolm Smith Motorsports in Riverside, California, became a cornerstone for bikers seeking quality products and expertise.
Smith’s philanthropic efforts were equally impactful. In 2000, he established the Malcolm Smith Motorsports Foundation, dedicated to supporting children in Baja California, Mexico. Through annual charity rides and fundraising events, he made significant contributions to schools and orphanages.
His contributions to motorcycling were recognized with numerous honors, including inductions into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1978, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1996, and the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1998. His legacy endures through his family and the countless individuals he inspired. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Malcolm Smith Motorsports Foundation, continuing his mission to support the children of Baja.
Malcolm Smith’s life was a testament to passion, innovation, and generosity. His influence transcended racing, leaving an indelible mark on the motorcycling community and beyond. He will be remembered.
