“With the new BMW R 12 G/S, BMW Motorrad is offering a classic enduro for puristic off-road fun,” Markus Lederer, head of BMW’s boxer series, said in a company press release. “We know that numerous fans have been eagerly waiting for this motorcycle.”
The new, R 80 G/S-inspired adventure bike borrows the 1170cc air/oil-cooled boxer engine that powers many of the brand’s current R 12 family of machines. It promises 109 hp at 7000 rpm and 85 lb.-ft. of torque at 6500 rpm. The mill features updated cylinder head covers that take their design inspiration from past BMW two-valve boxer engines, and it utilizes a new single-flow exhaust system with an upswept muffler.
Riders will get the most of this torquey engine by way of the package of ride modes. The standard model will feature Rain, Road, and Enduro modes that utilize input from the bike’s Dynamic Traction Control, Engine Drag Torque Control, ABS, and other control systems to provide the perfect character in all ride scenarios. Enduro is the most interesting of the bunch, offering smoothed throttle response and minimal engagement from the front wheel lift, torque, and traction control systems. ABS at the rear will still engage, though it is said to operate in the “midrange” which BMW promises is “adapted to off-road use.”
If you want a higher level of off-road control, you’ll have to upgrade to include the Enduro Pro mode which deactivates rear ABS and numerous other systems for a peak dirt-riding experience. Another upgrade riders will likely consider worth the cash is the Shift Assist Pro system which allows for clutchless movement throughout the gearbox.
The engine lives within a new tubular steel bridge frame and suspension configuration that’s been designed specifically for off-road use.
“By adjusting the steering head position of the frame, incorporating a large 21-inch front wheel, and long suspension travel, we succeeded in bringing the new BMW R 12 G/S, a fully off-road capable boxer enduro, to life,” said Ulf Musekamp, BMW’s vehicle concept manager. “An 18-inch rear wheel is part of the Enduro Package Pro and ensures maximum off-road fun.”
The 45mm fork and rear shock are both fully adjustable, offering 8.2 inches and 7.8 inches of travel, respectively. The back end is equipped with a hydraulic end stop as well to help prevent hard shocks when riding in particularly rough terrain. Dual 310mm discs at the front are gripped by axial-mounted two-piston floating calipers while at the back a two-piston caliper bites down on a 265mm disc. The standard-issue R 12 G/S will feature BMW Motorrad ABS Pro. This partially integral system allows the rider to slightly engage the rear brake while operating the front brake lever. It is also calibrated to optimize ABS assistance through corners.
The standard R 12 G/S will come with a round instrument dial with integrated control lights and digital display information. For an upcharge, you can get a 3.5-inch TFT digital display setup. Regardless of which route you take, the bike will be Bluetooth compatible and capable of connecting to your smartphone via the BMW Motorrad Connected app.
Other standard touches include an Intelligent Emergency Call system, a keyless ride system, and standard LED lighting throughout.
As for the overall design, the bike honors its R 80 G/S forebear with its Enduro styling, high front fender, reduced-size cockpit fairing, spoked wheels, and fuel tank shape. In addition to making the bike look good, BMW has also given plenty of attention to rider comfort and control, optimizing the rider triangle for on- and off-road use. The brand also provides a variety of seat, footrest, handlebar, and passenger/travel upgrades.
