Overview

The “power cruiser” genre became increasingly popular after the success of Ducati’s Diavel, and MV Agusta was quick to jump onto the bandwagon with its release of the “Dragster” version of its 800 Brutale in 2014. Obviously based on the middleweight Brutale, the Dragster differs by its larger 200/50-17 rear tire (trading in the stock 180/55 rear rubber) mounted on a wider 17 x 6.00 rear wheel. The tailsection is much stubbier than the Brutale, with a different seat shape and molded taillight that is wrapped around the outer edges. The Brutale’s tubular handlebar is replaced by a unique machined bar riser setup that is slightly narrower and allows room for the transverse-mounted adjustable steering damper just above the top triple clamp.

The 798cc three-cylinder engine underwent some refinements in 2021 aimed at meeting stringent Euro 5 emissions standards while improving power. Much attention was paid to reducing frictional losses. The sintered metal valve guides and DLC-treated inverted cup cam followers make the valve train more efficient, while the latest-generation plain bearings provide a solid gain in reliability and reduced frictional losses at the crank assembly. The lubrication circuitry has been modified, reducing the volume of oil required, and a more efficient oil pump results in reduced power losses, lower oil temperatures, and reduced oil splashing and its consequent drag on the crankshaft.

The SCS stands for Smart Clutch System, which all three Dragster variants (the Dragster RR SCS, Dragster RC SCS, and America) will be equipped with. Working with American aftermarket clutch manufacturer Rekluse, the SCS is a mechanical automatic clutch system that allows the rider to take off from and come to a stop without having to use the clutch lever. Combined with the EAS 3.0 transmission and its bidirectional quickshifter, the clutch lever is basically unnecessary—but it’s there in case the rider desires to use it.
