Removing an endless motorcycle chain is a royal pain without the right equipment (cue the vise grips, hacksaw and bloody knuckles). Even MacGyver would have a hard time figuring out how to rivet a master link without the proper utensils.
Thankfully, there are plenty of tools made for the express purpose of breaking and riveting motorcycle chains, and none of them are as simple and easy to use as Motion Pro’s PBR chain tool.
PBR is one of our favorite shop-time libations, but in this case the acronym stands for the tool’s three functions: Press, Rivet and Break. Those words printed on the tool body—along with the corresponding indexing letters printed on the anvil—are what make Motion Pro’s chain tool so easy to use. Simply position the anvil block in the tool so the letter on the anvil corresponds to the desired function, and have at it. The magnetized anvil body and riveting tips are a huge help since they keep all the parts in place while you’re positioning the tool on the chain.
The PBR tool is made from solid steel and works on #520, 525 and 530 chains. The instructions imply that you can break a link using brute force, but we suggest grinding the end off the chain pin first; it will press out easier and prevent damage to the extractor pin. Motion Pro's PBR works so well, it's relegated our other, more complicated chain tools to the bottom drawer of the toolbox. Motorcyclist Shop Czar Michael Candreia gives the PBR a greasy thumbs-up!
