MC Tested: VholdR ContourHD Video Camera

When I started searching for an onboard video system to record my vintage-racing exploits, I knew I needed something simple and trouble-free. I spend so much time working on my 40-year-old bike at the track that there's not much left for fiddling with some finicky camera!

The VholdR ContourHD high-definition video camera has proven the perfect solution. At just $299, it's inexpensive, compact, easy to mount on bike or body, and the wide-angle, 135-degree lens captures outstanding footage. It's simple to use, too, with a single, sliding on/off switch and a secure yet easily removable/rechargeable battery. Bonus points for the clever laser line-of-site indicator that lets you fine-tune the viewing angle prior to use.

There are two recording options: HD (1280 x 720 @ 30 fps) or Fast SD (848 x 480 @ 60fps). Though the maker claims Fast SD is better for high-speed action, I've used both and found HD works best. An included USB cable connects to any laptop so you can download video between sessions and review your lines before your next race. The Mac- and PC-compatible Easy Edit software is intuitive and easy to use, and the Easy Share software lets you upload your videos to the VholdR website for others to view.

With no troublesome wiring, loose connections or failing external batteries, the ContourHD is perfect for motorcycle applications. Now I'm looking forward to trying VholdR's next evolution: the ContourHD 1080p, said to offer even better HD clarity. Priced at $330, it should be available soon.
