MC Tested: Bean Clean Chain Cleaner

There are lots of ways to clean a chain. Your owner's manual probably suggests using kerosene, and many motorcyclists swear by WD-40. But both of those substances are toxic to some degree, and most of the application-specific products on the market bear various discouraging warning labels.

Not so with Bean Clean. This soybean-based chain cleaner is all-natural, non-toxic, non-flammable, and it works. While many "green" products' performance tends to fall short of their conventional counterparts, Bean Clean is as effective as any petroleum-based solvent, and doesn't emit any noxious fumes or pose a threat to rubber parts like O-rings.

The deluxe chain-cleaning kit we sampled includes a 15-ounce can of Bean Clean and the Chain Drain-a clever little device that prevents overspray and dirty drippings from fouling your rear tire and the ground. Bean Clean has the consistency of vegetable oil, and a distinctly organic scent. Using the stuff is easy: Just spray it on, let it work its magic for a moment, and then wash it off with a spray bottle filled with water. The emulsified substance is engineered to rinse off without leaving any residue, which helps chain lube adhere better.
