MC Tested: Accu-Products Accu-Mix Fuel Jug

No more hassling with separate premix measuring cups.

If you regularly ride or race a two-stroke that doesn't have an auto-oiling system built in, then you know the frustration of mixing oil with fuel. For something that's not necessarily that difficult to do, it seems like every time I'm out at a race, I constantly find myself making cheap bets with my race partner, the loser having to mix the two-stroke fuel for the day. Apart from that, I also frequently spot some poor soul wandering the pits, begging to borrow a Ratio-Rite, either because theirs is cracked, busted, or simply M.I.A..

Enter the Accu-Products Accu-Mix Fuel Jug, a 1.7-gallon fuel jug with a secret party trick— it’s got a separate compartment for mixing two-stroke oil built in. The process is the same—fill the jug with the desired amount of fuel (you have a choice between U.S. gallons, liters, milliliters, ounces, and quarts), close the cap, open the second cap for the smaller partition, add the desired ratio of oil per selected volume of fuel (available ratios are 15:1, 16:1, 20:1, 32:1, 40:1 and 50:1), close the second cap, flip the jug over and shake. The oil will automatically mix with the fuel through a channel built into the jug that combines the two. Flip it back over, open the cap and you’re ready to fuel up your bike or other equipment that drinks premix.

The Accu-Mix fuel jug is composed of UV-resistant plastic (typical of most gas jugs) and is easy to see through when filling for accurate measurements. Both of the filler caps twist on securely and feature O-ring seals. A handle at the top makes carrying easy, and the smaller capacity of the jug means that it stores away easily.

On the flipside, you can only mix a maximum of 1.7 gallons of fuel at a time. Some will find this useful, as it ensures that you won’t have gallons upon gallons of unused fuel sitting around going bad, and you can just repeat the process until you have as much mixed fuel as your application requires.

The lack of a pouring spout is a bit of a bummer, but I imagine a retractable spout would cause some issues with leaking. You also need to make sure that you add the oil accurately, because if you add too much, there’s no way to pour excess back out without introducing gas into the mix. Luckily it’s very easy to see the oil through the semi-translucent plastic, and I didn’t have an issue with misreading. Also, while the Accu-Mix fuel jug is UN 3H1/Y approved, it’s not CARB approved.

If you’re like me and are constantly forgetting to bring a ratio-rite or any other type of premixing tool, the Accu-Mix gas jug is excellent to have trackside. Something about the simplicity and inclusion of all steps made mixing fuel enjoyable for a change, and I was still able to fill the bikes without a mess. For around $30 (plus shipping) from Accu-Products, it’ll pay for itself in time saved alone!
