The biggest news from Husqvarna at this year's EICMA show is its smallest bike, the EE 5, an electric mini motocrosser to be introduced as a 2020 model in the fall of 2019. This marks the brand's first foray into the eBike realm and is geared to younger riders that want to get their start with a dirt bike.
The air-cooled, permanent magnet 5 kW motor is comparable to 50cc mini bikes, according to Husqvarna, and the motor is powered by a 904 Wh lithium-ion battery. It's dust and waterproof, a must for a bike dedicated to off-road use. The battery will provide two hours ride time for beginner riders and faster riders will get 25 minutes before juice runs out. You can charge the battery in any 110 or 230 volt socket; 45 minutes of charging will yield an 80-percent charge and 70 minutes charging will get you to 100-percent.
Since it’s aimed at youngsters, there’s a roll-over kill switch built-in. You attach a lanyard to Junior’s hand and when he or she goes down, the bike will die when the element is pulled. There are six different ride modes to choose from too, so you can manage the available power output as necessary.
Husqvarna has designed the EE 5 to fit in seamlessly with the look of it’s larger motocross range. It’s built with a chrome-moly steel frame suspended by a 35mm, USD WP XACT air fork and WP monoshock. The front unit can be adjusted with an air pump, and the rear unit is also fully adjustable. There’s 8.07 inches and 7.3 inches travel available in the front and back.
Wave discs front and rear work with hydraulic calipers to bring the bike to a stop, and the bike rolls on black anodized aluminum rims and MAXXIS tires.
The base model EE 5 has a seat height of 27.5 inches, though with a few tweaks of the seat, bodywork and rear shock, can be adjusted down to 25.7 inches. If you need to go lower than that, Husqvarna offers a Suspension Lowering Kit that will bring the EE 5 seat height down to 21.9 inches.
Aluminum alloy NEKEN handlebars feature a locked ODI left grip and new throttle assembly and ODI grip on the side, designed specifically for the electronic drive. A handlebar pad is included too for some additional chest protection.
Pricing information is yet to be released, so stay tuned.
