Ducati has reached a production milestone, sending the 100,000th Multistrada off the production line. The first version of the popular machine left Bologna, Italy, 16 years ago, and has since been developed in a number of different configurations. The 100,000th was a 1260 Pikes Peak edition ordered by German rider Dave Hayward in Düsseldorf who got the lucky surprise of having his Multi hand-delivered by Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali.
The 2003 Multistrada 1000 DS marks the start of the model line, which has since included a Multistrada 620, 1100, 1200, and now both a 950 and 1260. There are actually two versions of the 950 available, a base model and 950 S, and four version of the 1260, 1260 S, 1260 D-air, 1260 Pikes Peak, and 1260 Enduro.
From the beginning, it’s been a dual purpose motorcycle that has pushed technological boundaries. It was the first bike to include ride modes in 2010, and later became the first machine to interface with an airbag-equipped jacket. It’s also the first model to feature Ducati’s Testastretta DVT engine.
It has long been a favorite all-rounder for riders, but the iterations available today make it a competitive model in the sport-touring, commuter, and adventure segments. The 1260 Pikes Peak delivered to Hayward is a pinnacle of the evolution of the machine, with Ducati’s latest 1262 DVT L-twin engine, a dynamic range of electronic safety aids and performance controls, and top-spec kit from Öhlins, Termignoni, Pirelli, and Brembo.
The future also looks bright for the Multistrada, with the expansion of its current versions as well as a new V4 model by 2021.
