When it comes to protective motorcycle apparel, there are much better materials than denim. In Cycle magazine's classic "Torn in the USA" test (September, 1988), cotton blue jeans wore completely through in 3 to 4 feet in a simulated 50-mph crash. A top-quality set of racing leathers, in contrast, lasted 86 feet.

All of which makes Cortech's DSX Denim Jacket suspect. Or rather it would, if it weren't for the fact that aside from its 13.5-ounce denim shell (slightly heavier than Levi's 501s), this best-selling $100 garment is as rugged as any textile riding jacket.

Key to that is its internal armor, with removable CE-approved pads at the shoulders and elbows and an articulated triple-density back protector. This jacket is obviously built for riding, with a wind flap behind the main zipper, pre-curved and rotated sleeves, stretch panels under the arms, a pair of adjustable waist belts and inside and outside pockets. Zipper-closed vents provide cooling in warm weather, and a removable quilted liner keeps you warm in the cold.

We've worn our DSX jacket for about six months now and have found it to be comfortable and versatile. Fashion-forward folk might find the styling sort of '70s Sasson (Ooh la la!), but you won't get a second look at the mall as long as you brush off the dead bugs beforehand. Speaking of which, the jacket is machine-washable; just remove the armor first, and don't put it in the dryer or else it will shrink. It's available in traditional blue or black denim, in men's sizes XS-XXXL, and order one size larger if you plan to wear it with the lining.
