Knee sliders are a consumable commodity, and if you frequent the racetrack they can become a significant expense. I’m long-legged and tend to press my knee against the ground in turns, so I burn through pucks in a hurry. Eager to get more than one track day out of a set, I stuck a pair of Chicken Hawk Racing knee sliders onto my leathers.

CHR pucks are offered in a softer, lighter, PU (polyurethane) “High Feel” compound and a harder, heavier, “Long Lasting” version. I went with the latter, which are molded from POM (polyoxymethylene) thermoplastic that offers high abrasion and heat resistance and low friction for a long-lasting, smooth-skimming puck. The curved shape of the sliders provides numerous positioning options on your leathers, and while the Velcro backing keeps the pucks securely in place, you don’t need a pair of pliers to pull them off!

At the track, the CHR pucks glide cleanly across the pavement with a moderate amount of drag. After my first session, I was surprised to see I’d ground just a few millimeters from the top of the domed slider. Most of the PU pucks I’ve used have melted rapidly, leaving huge sheets of slag along their trailing edge, but the higher melting point of the POM (330 degrees Fahrenheit) kept boogers to a minimum and only on my heavily favored left knee.

CHR’s “Long Lasting” knee sliders are cheaper than most replacement pucks and, in my experience, last nearly twice as long. For 2012 CHR is using a denser POM compound for even better durability.
