As noted in the preview of the new F 900 R, the F 900 XR benefits from a newly developed 895cc parallel-twin engine with an eight-valve, DOHC cylinder head. The mill was first introduced in the 2018 F 850 GS, but now offers 105 hp and 67.8 pound-feet of torque, meaning the 482.8-pound ready-to-ride machine will pack enough of a punch to have some fun in the twisties. It’s equipped with an anti-hopping, mechanically operated clutch standard, which can be upgraded with BMW’s electronic quickshifter if desired.
Similar to frames seen on BMW’s F and GS models, the new 900 XR features a steel bridge frame that utilizes the engine as a stressed member, and which is mated to a newly developed bolt-on rear frame. This allows the back end to be slimmer and shorter than the previous 800 model. It’s packing a plastic-welded fuel tank that provides just over 4 gallons capacity, allowing for an impressive 260 miles between fill-ups, according to BMW specs.
The 43mm USD fork provides 6.7 inches travel, and can be fitted with BMW’s Dynamic ESA electronic suspension adjustment. The rear shock gives 6.7 inches travel as well, and can also be upgraded.
BMW gave the XR a taller seat height, taller and more swept-back handlebars, lower footrests, and longer wheelbase than its new R sibling, designing ergonomics after the GS line of bikes for a more neutral, upright ride.
Braking is handled by dual hydraulically actuated four-piston calipers at the front and a single piston floating caliper at the rear, both equipped with BMW Motorrad ABS.
The new 900 XR also gets the updated 6.5-inch TFT color instrument panel, to easily read important information in any conditions. It will also display any information when connected to your smartphone via the BMW Motorrad Communication System.
The F 900 XR will come in Light White, Galvanic Gold Metallic, or Racing Red colorways. Pricing and US availability aren’t currently available.
