Motorcycle Gear And Accessory Deals On Amazon Prime Day

Love it or hate it, just don’t miss out on the bargains

“What motorcyclists need, it seems to me, are a whole new set of festivals and holidays that have real meaning in our calendar lives, now that television and too much ambient light have made us largely unaware of the movements of the planets and stars.”

- Peter Egan, August 1999

Amazon Prime Day begins Monday, July 16 at 3 p.m. and Motorcyclist editors will be highlighting the best deals on motorcycle gear and accessories throughout the day. Over the course of a day and a half, Amazon Prime members (apparently there are more than 100 million of them worldwide) will be in on the mega retailer's best sales of the year. Let's just gloss over the fact that they treat it like it's a holiday.

Peter Egan was onto something when he took it upon himself to institute holidays particularly for the motorcyclist: Gassing Day, TT Senior Sunday, The Feast of St. Taglioni, etc.

For the motorcyclist, the calendar year is brimming with Moments of Motorcycling Significance that, as Egan points out, are worth celebrating. Any excuse for a party, really.

What Egan didn't have in mind is an artificial "holiday," like Amazon Prime Day, designed by a huge corporation to give consumers another chance to blow their hard-earned dough on stuff they don't really need. Holidays are supposed to be about commemorating significant events; shaping our desires with ritual, feast, and fast in order to reorient our lives; and—for the motorcyclist—giving the opportunity to "hoist a pint of something dark and observe a moment of silence for those lost in the last great real roadrace on Earth" (Egan speaks here of the IOM TT, of course).

Sitting alone in front of a computer hunting for bargains does not make a holiday. But if you can ignore the holiday label, throughout the day Amazon will likely have some great deals on gear and accessories for the motorcyclist.

Check back to motorcyclistonline.com on Monday to see what deals MC editors have discovered. If you plan on "observing" Prime Day, maybe also take a page from Egan and institute your own motoring-inspired holiday. At least grab a pint of something dark. Better yet, go for a ride.
