As we get nearer to official 2020 model year launch season, the spy shots keep on coming. This time it's KTM, putting its revised 1290 Super Duke R through its paces in Austria.
The 2020 Super Duke R looks to be significantly changed in some key areas beyond the shrouds, which are just a little bit too long for my taste. Of course, in production with the full dress of graphics my mind could definitely be changed.
The frame design is an unmistakable difference, with the trellis main frame and subframe dramatically changed from the 2019 edition. Updated mounting points are clear at the front of the engine, and there could perhaps be lighter overall weight to look forward to thanks to the cast subframe. Both of these elements could go a long way to improving the handling of the Super Duke R.
There's also likely some notable revision to the engine and electronics too, most likely in order to reach Euro 5 compliance. These are hinted at with the rerouted pump hose, seemingly larger radiator, and updated exhaust setup. Known for its thunderous, torque-laden power delivery, the existing 1,301cc LC8 V-twin may be changed though we can't tell, but expect some sort of performance upgrade.
We also see updated wheels and a larger instrument display. Wheels are a common place to shave weight and help improve handling, and it’s always nice to have a clearer view of the bike’s status with better instrumentation, particularly if you have more settings to cycle through.
There’s likely a whole lot more going on with this beast of a streetfighter, but we’re going to have to wait a little longer for the full details of the update.
