In addition to two 230cc-sized KLX machines—the KLX230 dual sport and KLX230R—Kawasaki has announced a KLX300R for the 2020 model year. It will price at $5,499 and be available late summer 2019.

The 300R marks the new top of Kawasaki’s off-road line, and as with the other two models announced, it’s brand new throughout. The liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 292cc single has a 78 x 61.2mm bore and stroke, 11.1:1 compression ratio, and lightweight piston, pin, and connecting rod, with a Nikasil plating on the cylinder as well.

Dual, slim radiators are inspired by those used in the KX line and the stainless-steel exhaust is equipped with an emissions-reducing honeycomb catalyzer in the silencer and spark arrestor. It also packs a six-speed transmission with shorter 50/14 final ratio for reliable pull in the low- to midrange.

A new steel perimeter frame and aluminum swingarm provide a compact bike with a 26.9-degree rake and 56.5-inch wheelbase. It’s suspended by a 43mm fork with 11.2 inches travel which makes use of a lower spring rate so damping can operate more effectively over a larger stroke range. The Uin-Trak setup at the rear also provides 11.2 inches travel, and features a piggyback reservoir and compression damping and preload adjustability.

Riders will enjoy 12 inches of ground clearance with the 300R from the perch of the 36.4-inch high seat.

It rolls on 21-inch front and 18-inch rear aluminum wheels, shod in Dunlop MX52 tires. The 270mm front disc is the same braking hardware used on KX models, and is complemented by a 24mm disc at the rear. Both ends borrow master cylinders from elsewhere in Kawasaki’s off-road line.

The KLX300R is also adjustable to better fit the rider thanks to Ergo-Fit handlebar components. This gives the rider four levels of adjustment to ensure handlebar placement is just right for better control. The brake lever position is adjustable also. The compact layout of the cockpit adds to the easy handling characteristics, as does the narrow design of the bodywork.
