Suzuki continues its early release previews of 2016 models with a look at the middleweight adventure touring and dual-sport lineups. Continuing in the middleweight ADV category is the stalwart V-Strom 650 ABS along with the stylized XT version that was introduced last year.
Both ADVs are powered by Suzuki’s familiar 645cc V-twin with no significant change noted in the engine or chassis hardware. The XT model again rolls on reverse-spoke aluminum wheels that, according to Suzuki, offer “better shock absorption” and a “comfortable ride” yet still allow use of tubeless tires. Also setting the XT apart from the base V-Strom is its distinctive front beak that serves to direct airflow to the engine via integrated air ducts. And to look more like a certain German ADV machine, you know.
Color options on both V-Stroms are changed up for ’16 with the base 650 ABS available in red or silver, and the up-spec XT comes in black only. While most of the spec sheet remains unchanged for 2016, good news can be found in the price column. MSRP for the V-Strom 650 ABS is $8,399 (down from $8,549 in 2015) and the XT ABS sees a substantial $1,900 drop to $8,499, which is the result of Suzuki “de-bundling” the Adventure model’s hard luggage from the XT’s build sheet. No word, incidentally, on whether we’ll see an Adventure model for ’16 or how it’ll be equipped, but Suzuki has been rolling out new-product information slowly so far this year, so we don’t assume the model is dead. Napping, perhaps.
A solid commuter for riders coming in from the dirt side that want a lighter and more trail-ready dual-sport option from Suzuki will look to the DR650S. Returning for 2016 with its Mikuni-carbureted 644cc air-cooled single for power and a claimed curb weight of 366 pounds, the DR650S offers a 34.8-inch seat height that can be adjusted down by more than 1.5 inches using Suzuki's accessory side stand kit. MSRP is $6,499 with black bodywork.
Dual-sport fans familiar with the DR series will recognize the DR-Z400S and DR-400SM, two returning bikes that combine street-legal canyon riding with the rugged capability of a dirt bike. Both come powered by the same liquid-cooled, single-cylinder 398cc engine; the main difference between the DR-Z400S and DR-Z400SM are the SuperMoto’s 17-inch front and rear wheels mounted with wider tires, and an inverted fork. The DR-Z400S will sell for $6,599 and the SM for $7,199.
