When the 2005 Honda Helix arrived, the scooter nameplate from the Japanese automotive manufacturer had been in production for 19 years. However, the production of the Helix was coming to an end, after almost a decade of little or no changes from one model year to the next. The 2005 edition was no different.
A lone model, the 2005 Honda Helix had a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $5,299. It is powered by a four-stroke, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine. It displaces at 244 cubic centimeters, and has a single overhead camshaft intake valve train and bore and stroke of 72 x 60 millimeters (2.84 x 2.36 inches). Fueling the engine is a 30-mm carburetor.
Paired with the engine on the 2005 Honda Helix is a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). As a special type of automatic gearbox, the CVT shifts through an unlimited number of gears – instead of a set number of them – to promote greater engine and fuel efficiency. A low-maintenance belt drive completes the powertrain, with an electric ignition for quick scooter start-up. Each 2005 Helix has a fuel tank with a peak capacity of 3.2 gallons (12 liters).
Each 2005 Honda Helix has a front-disc-brake rear-drum-brake system: not as effective in stopping power as an all-wheel disc brake system, but better than an all-wheel drum brake set-up. For its suspension – and consequently a smooth and controlled ride – the 2005 Helix uses a leading link fork at the front, and a twin-sided swing arm with two shock absorbers at the back.
The 2005 Honda Helix was designed as a half-fairing motorcycle, with a plastic shell covering the upper part of its sturdy steel frame. Front and rear fenders further furnish the scooter, and Honda gave it a Black or Pearl White color finish. On top of the scooter is a one-piece vinyl seat – complete with a fixed backrest – for accommodating the driver and one more occupant. A kick stand provides the 2005 Helix with parking ability.
At the front of the 2005 Honda Helix is a digital dashboard with a clock, trip odometer, speedometer, and fuel level and temperature warning gauges. Also at the front are mounts for the installation of a windshield. Under-seat and lockable compartments, as well as a place to hang a helmet, serve as the Helix’s storage accommodations. A halogen headlight and a pair of side mirrors were included to enhance visual perception on the road.
Each 2005 Honda Helix has a wheelbase of 63.8 inches (1,620.5 mm), and the seat height for the scooter is measured at 26.2 inches (665.5 mm). The dry weight for each 2005 Honda Helix is estimated at 349.4 lbs. (158.5 kilograms).
Considering its price tag, the 2005 Honda Helix is merely an adequate scooter. Not the most advanced of machines, Honda must have thought of letting it be as its production run wound down.
