Yamaha's latest R1 is, far and away, the most sophisticated superbike that the company has ever built. Associate Editor Zack Courts got to ride the new machine at Eastern Creek in Australia and reported on the bike's technology and performance in his First Ride report (see Yamaha R1 and R1M First Ride HERE). Now we finally have a bike at the Motorcyclist garage, and the first order of business is running it on our in-house Dynojet dynometer.
Yamaha claims more power from this track-oriented superbike. It has an all-new engine with bigger cylinder bores, bigger valves, a higher redline, and lots of other go-fast mods. So how much power does it put to the ground? Watch the video below to find out.
Impressive figures for sure, especially compared to the 2014 bike's output. But the new R1's 168 horsepower is likely to be 10 or more ponies down on the new BMW S1000RR's output, not to mention the new Ducati Panigale 1299. How will this fantastic new superbike stack up against the latest machinery for Europe and Japan? Check back later for the full test.
